The Plemenita Općina Turopoljska continues the tradition of Žirovina in Turopolje Forest, an event celebrating the rich heritage of the Noble Great Forest. The event aims to showcase the wealth of local forests and encourage people to spend time in nature. This Saturday, 10 September, promises a record-breaking programme with activities for all ages and interests.
Lugarnica Čardak is the central hub of the event, so let’s first outline what awaits you there, and then explain the various ways you can explore the Turopolje Forest from this starting point. Right from the start, we would like to emphasize that all programs are free of charge, however, activities marked with an asterisk (*) require prior email registration due to limited availability.
Lugarnica Čardak – Central Hub of the Event
Lugarnica Čardak is the heart of Žirovina, offering a wide range of activities: • Skill testing with airsoft guns, bows and arrows, axes, and fun cornhole games. • Eco Go-Kart races (pedal-powered mini vehicles). • Quad rides to explore forest paths. • Horse riding with guidance from the riders of the Kravat Regiment, offering a unique connection between humans and horses.
Schoolchildren, as well as younger visitors, will also enjoy the playroom organised by the Tur Women’s Association from Turopolje, which offers a wide range of fun outdoor activities, including games, laughter, and entertainment. Wooden Architecture of Turopolje will be the focus of a dedicated workshop, where you can learn how the charming wooden buildings of our region were constructed—and even try building one yourself. Additionally, the exhibition “Folk Costumes Between the Kupa and Sava Rivers” will showcase the traditional attire of Turopolje, Vrhovlje, and the surrounding area.
Visitors can also relax under the forest canopy while enjoying local gastronomy, featuring Turopolje roast pig, hunter’s stew, and, for the first time, craft Turopolje beer. Live music will be provided by HPD Kučani, followed by Tamburaški sastav Dorat.

Cycling to the Forest*
The cycling adventure in Turopolje Forest begins at 2:00 PM in Velika Gorica, starting in front of the Turopolje Museum, for all those who wish to set off from the city centre on two wheels to reach Žirovina. A guided group will accompany participants along a safe 12 km route – Velika Gorica, Novo Čiče, Staro Čiče, Kuče – all the way to Lugarnica Čardak. Every cyclist participating in the organised ride will receive a voucher for lunch and a drink. After lunch and a short rest, the next ride departs at 4:00 PM from Lugarnica along an 8+8 km dirt trail to the historic monument Vrata od Krča in the heart of the forest, followed by a return to Lugarnica for socialising and relaxation.
Truffle Hunt*
Did you know that the forests of Turopolje are rich in black truffles? This extraordinary ingredient, with its unique aroma and flavour, is becoming increasingly integrated into Turopolje cuisine, thanks to the Zagreb County Tourist Board, which has placed the truffle firmly on Croatia’s gastronomic map. The warmer months are the perfect time to hunt for this “forest treasure.” Organised by the Zagreb County Tourist Board, participants will be guided by a professional truffle hunter and their trained dog, the perfect team to help uncover these precious black gems.
The truffle hunt starts at 3:00 PM from Lugarnica Čardak and lasts approximately one hour.
Quad Adventure*
Our partner AvanTuropolje invites you to explore the well-known and hidden forest paths of Turopolje Lug on quads, covering approximately 8 km. The program begins with an introduction to the vehicle, then a ride on gravel roads, onto forest trails, and finally deeper into the woods, where your driving skills will be put to the test. Each ride lasts 30 minutes, and the guided column includes four two-seater quads. Departure times are 3:00 PM, 4:00 PM, and 5:00 PM. When registering via email, please specify your preferred departure time to confirm your reservation.
Kayaking on the Odra River
The Odra River flows through the heart of Turopolje, historically nourished by numerous tributaries of our region. Although larger rivers such as the Sava and Kupa have somewhat overshadowed it, the Odra still meanders through the Turopolje plain, offering a peaceful oasis in harmony with the Velika Šuma forest. Backpack Adventure Travel will guide you on a kayaking tour along the Odra, led by an experienced guide. Paddling upstream from Čička Poljana, the tour lasts about 1 hour on the calm waters of the Odra, making it suitable even for younger paddlers. The kayaks are two-seaters, and each tour accommodates 10 kayaks. Departures from Lugarnica Čardak are at 2:30 PM and 4:30 PM.
Flying Above the Forest from Velika Gorica Aeroclub Airport*
Once we’ve walked, cycled, ridden, paddled, and driven, why not take to the skies? The Velika Gorica Aeroclub, located between Buševec and Turopolje, right on the edge of the Turopolje Forest, offers a bird’s-eye view of the area. For the brave who wish to board a motor glider and soar into the skies with a pilot, spots are extremely limited – one person per flight. Interested participants must submit a one-sentence email explaining why they should be chosen for this unique adventure. Winners will be contacted with a scheduled flight time. Each flight lasts approximately 30 minutes.
