Zagreb County Wine Roads

Where Every Journey Becomes an Experience

A journey along one of Zagreb County's wine roads offers far more than exceptional wines. Whether you are travelling as a couple, with friends or as a family, each route promises memorable experiences, authentic flavours and unexpected discoveries.

The Plešivica Wine Road winds through rolling hills blanketed with vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see. In recent years, Plešivica has established itself as one of Croatia's most exciting wine regions, renowned above all for its outstanding sparkling wines. Alongside these acclaimed labels, visitors can also discover something truly distinctive—amphora wines, crafted using ancient winemaking techniques. An increasing number of local winemakers are embracing natural wine production, while the same philosophy extends to the region's cuisine. Inspired by generations of local farming traditions, the restaurants of Plešivica and Žumberak offer everything from authentic regional specialities to refined fine dining. Add to that the Cheese Road, an extensive network of cycling trails and spectacular panoramic views from the summit of Plešivica, and every visit becomes a complete destination experience.

The Zelina Wine Road is the home of Kraljevina, an indigenous grape variety found only in this region. Fresh, elegant and remarkably easy to enjoy, it has become the signature wine of summer gatherings, while its sparkling counterpart, Kraljica, offers another expression of this unique variety. Sveti Ivan Zelina is also known for its traditional medieval knights' tournament. Outside the festival season, local family farms welcome visitors with friendly farm animals and outdoor activities designed for children. Rolling green hills, vineyards once owned by noble families, and the warm hospitality of boutique wineries, family farms and local restaurants create an atmosphere that invites you to slow down and savour every moment.

Samobor, long regarded as Zagreb's favourite excursion destination and immortalised in the beloved Croatian classic One Song a Day Takes Mischief Away, delights visitors with far more than its famous cream cakes. Here you can taste Bermet, the town's iconic aromatised wine, infused during fermentation with carob, raisins, figs, and wormwood, giving it a distinctive bittersweet character. Samobor's culinary creativity continues with Muštarda, a unique mustard enriched with black grape jam and red wine, creating a sweet-and-spicy accompaniment that perfectly complements meat dishes. Some of the town's greatest attractions lie beneath the surface, including Grgos Cave, where visitors are guided through its fascinating underground world by the cave's discoverer himself.

The Ivanić-Grad Wine Road celebrates Škrlet, an indigenous white grape variety known for its fresh, elegant character and perfect pairing with lighter dishes such as fish and pasta. Here, traditional winemaking meets contemporary creativity through immersive wine tastings accompanied by live DJ performances, where music enhances the perception of aromas, flavours and emotions, creating a truly unique sensory experience.

One day is often not enough to experience everything Zagreb County's wine roads have to offer. That is why the region also boasts a wide selection of holiday homes, from contemporary countryside retreats to beautifully restored traditional wooden houses, allowing visitors to extend their stay and turn a day trip into an unforgettable weekend escape.
