Zagreb County is celebrating St. Martin's Day from 7 to 15 November with a vibrant program of events across seven towns and municipalities. Traditional must-christening ceremonies, folklore performances, concerts, and local gastronomy will bring together residents and visitors to honour one of the most cherished customs of continental Croatia. This festivity has marked the end of the winegrowing season for centuries.
Traditionally observed on 11 November, St. Martin's Day symbolises the ritual transformation of must into young wine through a ceremonial blessing. In folk tradition, it also marks the end of autumn and the completion of vineyard work—a moment to celebrate the dedication of winemakers and give thanks for the fruits of their labour. Deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of continental Croatia, the celebrations are eagerly awaited throughout Zagreb County.
"This beautiful tradition, which has connected people for centuries, is today a celebration of community, togetherness, and gratitude for the richness our land provides. We invite everyone to experience an authentic St. Martin's Day with traditional music, local flavours, and a unique atmosphere. These festivities are also our contribution to preserving intangible cultural heritage, proudly passed on to younger generations," said Ivana Alilović, Director of the Zagreb County Tourist Board, while also encouraging visitors to enjoy the festivities responsibly.
Petar Grašo, Psihomodo Pop, and Performances by Local Cultural Associations
This year's program begins in Dugo Selo with a three-day celebration of the City Days in the Sports Hall. Concerts by Petar Grašo (7 November at 8 PM), Psihomodo Pop (8 November at 8 PM), and the annual KUD Preporod performance featuring the must-attend christening ceremony (9 November at 5 PM) promise a rich and diverse experience for all generations.
In Velika Gorica, the Petek na Gorice event will take place on 7 November from 10 AM at the Park of the Noble Municipality of Turopolje. On the same day, Sveta Nedelja will host two St. Martin's Day celebrations at 7 PM: one in the Bestovje Community Centre, organised by the Zagorec Heritage Association, showcasing traditional customs, and another in the Rakitje Community Centre, organised by KUD Z. L. Pikić.
Sveti Ivan Zelina invites visitors to St. Martin's Day on the Square on 8 November from 11 AM, while Samobor will celebrate on 11 November at the Brenta Association premises (Ferde Livadića 9), in cooperation with Zagreb County, the Samobor Tourist Board, and the Samobor Winegrowers and Winemakers Association. The final celebration will take place in Jastrebarsko on 15 November at 5 PM on Strossmayer Square.
The Zagreb County Tourist Board encourages all visitors to enjoy the festivities responsibly and exercise moderation when consuming alcoholic beverages.
