March in Zagreb County: A Month of Encounters, Culture and Activity

March in Zagreb County never arrives with great fanfare. It appears quietly, almost imperceptibly, in days that suddenly grow longer and in a light that is no longer winter. A softer light, morning mist above the fields, and footsteps that slow down because there is no longer a rush to get home before nightfall. There are no sudden changes – just the gentle opening of windows, a walk to the town square, and a return to one another. Spring is not announced with words, but with the habit of going out again. And once we do, we realise that the calendar already offers more reasons to do so than we had planned.

Spring in continental Croatia has always been a time of gathering, creativity and community. That same spirit is reflected in the programme of events that fills towns and municipalities across Zagreb County throughout March. Theatre performances, concerts, exhibitions, workshops, festivals and sporting events all confirm the richness and diversity of activities that accompany the arrival of the new season. “Spring is a time we always look forward to,” says Ivana Alilović, Director of the Zagreb County Tourist Board.

During March, more than 60 events will take place across Zagreb County – including over 15 theatre performances and exhibitions, eight concerts, film programmes, 15 workshops, four sporting events and six festivals.

Among the many events taking place in March, several stand out for their significance, organisational scope and broader tourism appeal.

The Santa Domenica Spartan Trifecta Weekendtaking place on 28 and 29 March at Lake Orešje in Sveta Nedelja, is one of the largest sporting events of the month. This international obstacle race attracts competitors from Croatia and abroad, offering demanding courses tailored to different fitness levels. The two-day sporting spectacle further strengthens Zagreb County’s position as a recognised destination for active and sports tourism, while attracting a large number of visitors and accompanying activities.

History and heritage enthusiasts will find their moment on 21 March in Samobor, where the Battle of Samobor 1441 will be re-enacted at Vugrinščak. Organised by the Samobor Museum, this historical programme brings an important event from local history back to life by reconstructing a medieval battle. Authentic costumes, staging and interpretation of the historical context make this event one of the most distinctive heritage experiences in the county.

Several traditional programmes will also mark the arrival of spring and the Easter season. The Easter Fair, taking place on 21 March in Pisarovina, will bring together exhibitors of local products, handicrafts and seasonal festive items. In addition to Pisarovina, Easter-themed programmes will also be organised in Sveta Nedelja, Dugo Selo and Bistra through workshops, creative activities and events designed for all generations. These programmes highlight the importance of local traditions and community spirit while bringing a special festive atmosphere to public spaces across towns and municipalities.

A highlight of the cultural programme is the performance of Missa Jubilarison 15 March in Velika Gorica, as part of the Lučić Days festival. The concert, held at the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, forms part of Velika Gorica’s continuous musical and cultural programme dedicated to nurturing its tradition and contribution to sacred and classical music heritage. This event combines artistic value with local identity and occupies an important place in the county’s March cultural calendar.

At a time when everything is measured by speed and reach, March in Zagreb County reminds us of the value of direct experience – meeting people, attending live performances and sharing conversations after the programme ends. These events are not merely dates on a calendar; they are places of gathering and reminders that local communities have stories to tell and culture to share. The strength of the programme lies precisely in its spread across towns and municipalities: everyone can find something that resonates with them while discovering something new along the way. In this way, spring marks not only the change of season, but also the continuation of a vibrant, present and engaged cultural rhythm within the community.
