Workshops Held at the Velika Gorica Visitor Centre: Youth at the Heart of Sustainable Tourism and Climate Change Adaptation

On 5 and 6 February, educational workshops for young people focusing on sustainable tourism and climate change adaptation were held at the Velika Gorica Visitor Centre. The workshops brought together experts from various sectors who, through the exchange of experiences and examples of good practice, introduced young participants to key challenges and solutions related to sustainable tourism development.

On the first day, students from Velika Gorica High School participated in a workshop on climate challenges and potential solutions presented through the EU project KNOWING, in which the Zagreb County Tourist Board is a project partner. We extend our special thanks to Lidia Capković Martinek (Zagreb International Airport) and Denis Havlik (Austrian Institute of Technology) for their valuable contributions, as well as to Maja Toth, Director of the Velika Gorica Tourist Board, for her support.

On the second day, students from the Katarina Zrinski Private High School in Zagreb, as part of their Practice Enterprise course, explored how the tourism sector responds to sustainability challenges through dynamic presentations and discussions. Students had the opportunity to learn more about the work of Zagreb International Airport, the Velika Gorica Tourist Board, and the Zagreb County Tourist Board.

These meetings clearly demonstrated the strong interest young people have in topics that shape our future. The KNOWING project provides them with an opportunity to gain valuable knowledge about sustainable tourism and climate change adaptation.

“The support and cooperation of Zagreb International Airport have always been a priority in our joint work, as the airport represents a key platform for the development of continental tourism—not only for Zagreb County, but for the entire Republic of Croatia, as we were the leading airport by number of arrivals in 2024”, emphasised Lidia Capković Martinek, Head of Corporate and Internal Communications at Zagreb International Airport.

“This event was an excellent opportunity to introduce young people to the beauty and importance of our cultural heritage, while at the same time providing a platform for their active participation in the promotion of local tourism.”highlighted Maja Toth, Director of the Velika Gorica Tourist Board.

“Young people are the foundation of the future, and through education and experiences such as this event, we encourage them to recognise and nurture the richness of our destination—its culture, tradition, and authenticity. Through our partnership in the EU project KNOWING, we contribute to sustainable development, create space for new ideas, and build a resilient and innovative community. Our vision remains clear: together with young people, on whom the future depends, we are creating the best continental destination in Croatia.”stated Ivana Alilović, Director of the Zagreb County Tourist Board.
