Zagreb County Aligns Development Priorities: Towards a Year-Round, Sustainable, and Regenerative Destination
The regional coordination meeting on tourism development management in Zagreb County was held in an atmosphere of partnership dialogue and shared responsibility for the region’s future. The meeting brought together the county governor, mayors, municipal heads, and directors of local and regional tourist boards, with support from the Ministry of Tourism and Sport and the Croatian National Tourist Board. The focus was on aligning key steps in the development of tourism with the principles of a regenerative approach – a model that revitalises the space, engages the local community, and enhances residents' quality of life.
During the coordination session, progress in developing local tourism management plans was discussed, along with the integration of a unified development database and the identification of common challenges and priorities. Ivana Alilović, Director of the Zagreb County Tourist Board, emphasised that "collaboration between all local units is key to creating a destination where life is of higher quality, work is smarter, and development is responsible. Tourism management plans are more than just formalities for us – they are the tools with which we build a county that grows harmoniously and in accordance with regenerative principles."
She also highlighted the importance of open dialogue: "Each municipality and town has its own specificities, and such meetings give us a clear picture of the entire county, enabling us to make decisions that truly benefit our communities."
In a similar context, Damir Tomljenović, the Deputy Governor of Zagreb County, remarked, "The seriousness and dedication demonstrated by all our cities and municipalities affirm our shared vision. The tourism management plan provides a comprehensive overview of our needs and priorities, enabling us to direct development initiatives to areas that offer the greatest benefits. Our objective is to cultivate a county that fosters residents' well-being while attracting visitors, and this collaborative approach serves as the cornerstone of our success."
The entire discussion was aligned with the vision outlined in the Destination Management Plan:
"Zagreb County – a unique and most desirable year-round continental Croatian tourist destination, attractive for investment, work, and living, based on sustainability, resilience, and innovation."
“Zagrebačka županija – jedinstvena i najpoželjnija cjelogodišnja kontinentalna hrvatska turistička destinacija, poželjna za investicije, rad i život, temeljena na održivosti, otpornosti i inovativnosti.”
This vision represents the continuation of a strategic path that the county is following to build its future: as a destination that preserves its values, develops thoughtfully, and returns benefits to the community.
Zagreb County remains committed to building a distinctive, sustainable, and regenerative tourism model, founded on partnership, expertise, and alignment among all stakeholders.
