Welcome to Zagreb County — an attractive, year-round destination for excursions and recreation, with the green surroundings of Zagreb, the capital of the Republic of Croatia. Ours is a county of rich history and tradition, abundant cultural and ecclesiastical heritage, unspoilt nature and remarkable landscapes.
Located in the central part of north-western Croatia, covering 3,077 square kilometres and home to more than 300,000 residents, Zagreb County ranks as the sixth-largest by area and the fifth-largest by population among Croatian counties. Its distinctive geographical position — bordering Slovenia and encircling the City of Zagreb in an irregular horseshoe shape along its western, southern and eastern edges — has long made it a significant crossroads of European transport routes, one of Croatia’s principal gateways and an important transit region.
The dynamic pull and demographic strength of Zagreb have always been key drivers of tourism supply and demand within the County. At the same time, the wealth of diverse natural and cultural-historical assets provides the foundation for a wide range of tourism experiences. Alongside established forms of predominantly local tourism — excursion, recreational, business, and transit tourism — the County continues to develop health tourism, religious (pilgrimage) tourism, sports tourism, and rural tourism, representing distinctive, carefully curated segments of its overall offer.
Despite modern urban trends, the area surrounding the Croatian metropolis has preserved its spirit and traditions. Numerous small craft centres and traditional settlements scattered throughout the countryside stand as living testimony to this heritage. Today, they are appealing destinations for day-trippers, leisure visitors and business travellers alike — many of whom choose to spend a peaceful weekend here or find respite from the pace of professional life.
Closely connected to Zagreb throughout history — naturally, historically and economically — the surrounding region has given rise to many distinguished figures in the fields of history, art, science, politics, the clergy and literature. Over the centuries, kings, rulers and members of domestic and foreign nobility paused here on their journeys, some choosing to make it their home. The silent witnesses of those times — castles, medieval fortresses and numerous noble manor houses — continue to recount their stories to visitors today.
A chain of gentle mountains and rolling hills, picturesque vineyard slopes, untouched corners of nature, time-honoured traditions and vibrant events, a rich and diverse gastronomic scene, historic wine cottages and cellars where fine wines are shared, and above all the warmth and hospitality of its people — all this is Zagreb County.
Allow me, in closing, to invite you to explore our County through the words and images presented on these pages, to discover its people and experience their hospitality first-hand. I hope your stay will be a pleasant one, that you will feel truly at home, and that you will always find a reason to return.
