The Zagreb County Tourist Board has become a signatory of the prestigious global initiative, the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism, through which destinations, organisations, and companies commit to concrete measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen the resilience of tourism to climate change. Considered one of the most critical recent international documents for sustainable tourism development, the declaration sets specific, measurable targets and enjoys broad global support. Its significance is comparable to that of the Paris Agreement in the context of the worldwide economy, but it is tailored to the specific needs of the tourism industry.
With this step, Zagreb County sets high standards for sustainable and regenerative development and confirms its commitment to responsible destination management.
"The process took almost a year and involved aligning our plans, strategies, and activities with international standards. This achievement is another confirmation that we are on the right path toward a sustainable tourism future. Every success shows that our efforts pay off, but there is still a lot of work ahead. Sustainability must be lived every day," emphasised Ivana Alilović, Director of the Zagreb County Tourist Board.
The Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism is a global initiative launched in 2021 at COP26, committing the tourism sector to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality (Net Zero) before 2050. The declaration has been signed by 869 organisations from 90 countries. Tourism represents a significant share of global emissions, and the declaration is the first to unite the entire sector around science-based targets, encouraging joint action, the sharing of best practices, and providing a clear framework for reducing climate impact while preserving destinations for future generations.
By signing the Glasgow Declaration, the Zagreb County Tourist Board has committed to developing and implementing an action plan to reduce its carbon footprint, conserve natural resources, and engage the local community in the green transition of tourism.
