From Turopolje and Prigorje to Pokuplje, Samobor, Jastrebarsko and the eastern part of the county, Zagreb County's cultural heritage reveals the many layers that have shaped this remarkable region.
Velika Gorica – Turopolje from Roman Times to the Present Day
In and around Velika Gorica, visitors can explore the history of Turopolje through a variety of unique heritage sites. The Velika Gorica Visitor Centre presents the region's natural heritage, history and way of life through a modern multimedia exhibition. At the same time, the Turopolje Museum preserves valuable collections that tell the story of the area.
A glimpse into traditional everyday life can be found at the Modić-Bedeković Manor House in Donja Lomnica, the Ščitarjevo Ethno House and the Vukomeričke Gorice Heritage Collection. The 153rd Croatian Army Brigade Memorial Park commemorates more recent history. At the same time, the Andautonia Archaeological Park in Ščitarjevo takes visitors back almost two thousand years, showcasing the remains of an ancient Roman settlement.
Sveti Ivan Zelina – Discover the People Who Shaped the Region
The Sveti Ivan Zelina Museum offers an insight into the history of the Prigorje region. This summer, Ivanić-Grad combines nature, creativity, tradition and fun through a diverse programme of activities. Visitors can explore the exhibition Fly With Me, dedicated to the birdlife of Zagreb County. At the same time, children and families can take part in a range of creative workshops, including Creativity Everywhere, Summer Forest Adventure, Chalk Art, Watch Out, Cone!, Traditional Heritage Camp and Full Splash.
Jastrebarsko – The Heritage of a Wine-Growing Region
The traditions of the Jastrebarsko area are preserved through collections that celebrate everyday life and historic crafts. The Ethnographic Collection of the Sveta Jana Region showcases traditional costumes, household items and local customs. At the same time, the Golub Cooperage Collection highlights the centuries-old craft of barrel making, an essential part of the region's rich winemaking heritage.
Pisarovina – Life Along the Kupa River
The Donja Kupčina Heritage Museum preserves original wooden houses and ethnographic collections that offer an authentic insight into the traditional way of life in Pokuplje, Turopolje and the Croatian Posavina region. Throughout the year, the museum also organises educational programmes and workshops.
Samobor – From Livadić Manor to Historic Mining Tunnels
Samobor's rich cultural heritage can be discovered in many different ways. The Samobor Museum, located in the historic Livadić Manor, traces the town's development through the centuries, while the Open Gallery at Villa Allnoch and the Prica Gallery showcase contemporary art exhibitions.
For a completely different historical experience, visitors can descend into the St Barbara Mine in Rude, one of Croatia's oldest mining sites.
