The Zagreb County Tourist Board has once again demonstrated its expertise at the European level, achieving significant success with the InterWine project, one of six selected projects under the Interreg Slovenia–Croatia cross-border cooperation call. The project, officially titled “Connecting Cultural Heritage and Enotourism to Create a Sustainable Cross-Border Destination,” was selected from among 49 submitted proposals thanks to its strong focus on sustainability and innovation.
The aim of the InterWine project is to strengthen the role of culture and sustainable tourism through the development of a new joint tourism product that links cultural heritage with the tradition of winemaking and viticulture. The project will last 30 months and is financed with a total budget of €1,383,080.02, of which 80% is covered by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
An Innovative and Participatory Approach
The project will be developed using a participatory approach that involves local communities and key stakeholders from Croatia and Slovenia. Planned activities include focus groups and workshops that will help define and develop a plan for establishing a joint tourist destination. This process will ensure that the new tourism product reflects the real needs and wishes of local communities, which is essential for its sustainability.
A Combination of Tradition and Modern Technology
InterWine will be presented through both physical and online elements, including the equipping of facilities in Velika Gorica, Pušća, and Brežice to connect cultural heritage with wine offerings. A joint souvenir, itineraries, and a tourist guide will be developed, along with an intuitive online platform to promote enogastronomic offerings and cultural heritage.
Education and Promotion for Sustainability
A key part of the project includes educational and motivational workshops for stakeholders, piloting elements of the tourism product, and active promotion. To ensure long-term cooperation and capitalize on the project results, partners will produce an InterWine handbook and sign an Agreement on Future Cooperation.
Long-Term Sustainability and Resilience
This integrated approach will further improve the quality and appeal of the destination while ensuring long-term sustainability and resilience of tourism and cultural heritage in the regions of Croatia and Slovenia.
Project partners include the City of Velika Gorica, the Municipality of Pušća, the Crafts Training Center – an adult education institution, the Institute for Entrepreneurship, Tourism and Youth Brežice, the University of Maribor – Faculty of Tourism, Brežice, and the Posavski Museum Brežice.
This integrated approach will further improve the quality and appeal of the destination while ensuring long-term sustainability and resilience of tourism and cultural heritage in the regions of Croatia and Slovenia.
