Museums are the best guardians of local identity and the places where the unique story of a region is most clearly told. If you let them, only seemingly modest exhibition establishments around Zagreb will turn your visit into an exciting adventure that enriches the mind and broadens your horizons.

Samobor Museum

The long and exciting history of the well-known, small town of Samobor and its surroundings is gathered in the charming, noble manor. It includes an archaeological-geological, ethnographic, cultural, and historical collection and the art collection. In addition to the museum, visit the Prica gallery, the Lang photo gallery or the first private museum Marton.

Local Museum Donja Kupčina

The open-air museum in the municipality of Pisarovina is a collection of authentic country houses with outbuildings and a collection of ethnographic objects that transports us to some almost forgotten times from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.

St. Barbara's Mine, Rude

Part of the once-famous copper and iron mine with almost 500 years of tradition has been converted into an authentic museum that tells the mining history of this region. Moreover, a 1,500-meter-long mining-botanical educational trail completes the experience.

Matija Skurjeni Museum

Matija Skurjeni, a world-renowned painter and the representative of Croatian naïve art with an impressive biography, had donated a part of his work in 1984 for the future gallery in Zaprešić. It then grew into a museum about his life and work, located within the unique complex of the New Palace.

The Town Museum and Gallery Jastrebarsko 

The city museum and gallery are in the representatively remodelled building of the old city hall built in 1826. The museum preserves the archaeological, cultural-historical, and ethnographic heritage of the Jastrebarsko region. The famous "bula" - the charter of King Bela IV, which granted Jastrebarsko the status of a free royal city on January 12, 1257, is also exhibited here. Not far from Jaska in Krašić, you can visit The Memorial Room of Blessed Alojzije Stepinac.

Uskoks Museum of Žumberak 

Opened in 2006, on St. George's Day, the patron saint of the parish, in the former outbuilding of the rectory in Stojdraga. It exhibits a valuable collection of ethnographic objects in everyday usage by the people of Žumberak until recently. So, if you've never seen a comb for combing hemp and you don't know what hemp is, don't miss a tour of this exciting place. A little further away in the town of Sošice, in the monastery of the Sisters of the Order of Saint Basil the Great, there is a valuable ethnographic collection.
