Zagreb County: Record Tourism Growth and Successful Promotion of Sustainable Experiences

Zagreb County, Croatia’s leading certified region under the international Green Destinations system, recorded outstanding tourism results in 2024. With a significant increase in arrivals and overnight stays, the area has further strengthened its position as a desirable and sustainable destination in key international markets.

According to data from the eVisitor system, Zagreb County achieved a 14% increase in arrivals and a 14% rise in overnight stays compared to the same period last year. A comparison with the record year of 2019 highlights these exceptional results even more clearly: arrivals increased by 21%, while overnight stays rose by an impressive 33%.

Alongside growing tourism demand, accommodation capacity in the county has also expanded significantly. The number of basic beds increased by more than 30%, from 3,326 in 2019 to 4,761 today, while the number of accommodation establishments has doubled, from 300 to 603.

Destinations That Capture Visitors’ Hearts

Zagreb County offers a diverse range of destinations that attract visitors with their natural beauty, cultural heritage, and authentic eno-gastronomic experiences.

• Velika Gorica stands out as the most visited destination, attracting more than 36% of all guests. Its proximity to Zagreb, combined with unique natural attractions and traditional events, makes it a must-visit stop for travellers.

• Jastrebarsko, located in the heart of the Plešivica wine region, welcomed 20% of visitors. The destination is renowned for its premium wines, welcoming wineries, and picturesque landscapes.

• Sveta Nedelja recorded 18% of arrivals, thanks to its innovative blend of modern amenities and natural surroundings. Charming parks and local attractions make it an ideal choice for family outings and active holidays.

• Samobor, a symbol of traditional charm, attracted 11% of visitors. Its lovely streets, famous kremšnita dessert, and rich history make it an unmissable destination for lovers of the authentic Croatian spirit.

• Ivanić-Grad, with a 5% share, is gaining popularity due to the development of wellness tourism, including Naftalan—a unique medical and wellness centre based on natural healing oil resources.

Global Promotion Through Study Trips

In 2024, the Zagreb County Tourist Board organised a series of study trips for more than 40 international journalists and influencers from key markets, including the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States. These visits enabled participants to experience the county’s natural beauty and authentic stories first-hand and share them with millions of readers and followers worldwide.

Dutch journalists, including the editor of the prestigious Winelife magazine, explored Plešivica, while British influencers—such as Jordan Emily Brown (@hellomissjordan)—visited Žumberak, Samobor, Plešivica, and Velika Gorica. French journalists focused on eno-gastronomy, while American journalist Dr Elizabeth Smith explored the wine stories of Plešivica.

Particularly noteworthy projects included Vlogfest, which brought together globally renowned influencers in May, and the Michelin project, in which leading influencers explored the county’s gastronomic and tourism gems.
