The Zagreb County Tourist Board, in collaboration with the Velika Gorica University of Applied Sciences, has initiated the educational program titled "Sustainable and Regenerative Tourism." This program has convened stakeholders from the tourism sector, public health officials, and the academic community to cultivate a cadre of experts equipped to address the contemporary challenges facing the tourism industry.
The dynamic program, conducted through a combination of online and in-person sessions, engaged participants in thematic units that integrated theoretical knowledge with practical application. These units covered various topics, including the economic and strategic foundations of sustainable development, certification processes, destination management, green gastronomy, event safety, and tangible models of regenerative action.
Through a series of interactive workshops and mentoring sessions, participants were allowed to collaboratively develop their own destination management plans, addressing real-world challenges while considering local specificities and contemporary tools in destination management. This educational initiative will culminate in a final phase, during which participants will present their research papers at the international scientific and professional conference, Crisis Management Days, scheduled for June 2025.
The Dean of the Velika Gorica University of Applied Sciences articulated the following:
"In the face of contemporary climate, social, and economic challenges, it is essential to cultivate leaders who recognise tourism as a catalyst for transformation. We take pride in our commitment to educating precisely such professionals."
Professor Dr. Sanja Kalambura, Vice Dean for Science, stated:
“Sustainability is an ongoing process that is integrated into daily practices. Engaging the local community, minimising waste, and optimising the use of resources are not merely theoretical concepts; they represent critical decisions that yield significant impacts.”
Ivana Alilović, the Director of the Zagreb County Tourist Board, stated:
"Zagreb County is progressing towards its future by emphasizing knowledge, collaboration, and innovation. This educational initiative serves as a testament to our ability to collaboratively formulate a sustainable, competitive, and resilient narrative for tourism."
Through the educational program, participants acquired substantial knowledge and practical tools, enabling them to transition from mere observers to proactive agents of change. They learned to design tourism development initiatives emphasising collaboration and a long-term vision. Furthermore, they explored methods to enhance local resources through sustainable gastronomic models and short supply chains. Participants were also trained in applying standards and certification tools to facilitate effective destination management. Ultimately, they were equipped to develop safe, responsible, and inclusive tourism products that generate tangible value for both the community and the environment.
This educational program provided comprehensive knowledge and an opportunity for participants to connect, exchange ideas, and develop tangible solutions for the future of tourism in Croatia.
