September in Zagreb County is a month of vineyards, grape harvests, local flavours and a wealth of events that bring together local communities and visitors. As summer draws to a close, the spotlight shifts to wine roads, traditional cuisine, cultural programmes, sporting competitions and events that tell the stories of the places in which they are held. From time-honoured recipes and local customs to music, sport and contemporary experiences, the month-long programme offers plenty of reasons to explore different parts of the county.
“Events provide an opportunity to showcase and share with visitors everything that a region has carefully nurtured over the years. Behind them are people who preserve local knowledge, customs and stories, as well as those who create new experiences and give the destination a contemporary character. It is precisely this combination of tradition, people and new experiences that plays an important role in developing Zagreb County as a distinctive destination with a rich and diverse offer,” said Ivana Alilović, Director of the Zagreb County Tourist Board.
Wine, Bermet and Local Flavours
Jastrebarsko offers the month’s most extensive wine programme. Wine Days will take place from 25 to 27 September in the grounds of Erdödy Castle, with a concert bringing each evening to a close: Jole on 25 September, Gospodari Tambura on 26 September and Gazde on 27 September, all starting at 9 pm. Three wine workshops will also be held at Žitnica: Braje Robert on 25 September at 6 pm, Jagunić on 26 September at 5 pm and Dvorska Vina Šoškić on 27 September at 7 pm.
From 2 to 26 September, Samobor celebrates the Days of Samobor Bermet with three local producers – Bermet Philipecz, Župančić Vina and Vinarija Pavlin. On 6 September at 2 pm, Lake Rakitje will host the 26th Sveta Nedelja Fish Stew Festival, while on 26 September, Krašić will present Okusi Krašića (Flavours of Krašić), a day dedicated to local products.
On 22 September, the Zagreb County Tourist Board will hold the first educational workshop of the Sustainable AgriGastro Innovation Hub – From Soil to Signature project at Korak Winery & Restaurant.
Sport: Cycling, Trail and Motocross
The CRO Race will pass through Samobor and Sveti Ivan Zelina on 27 September. On the same day, MC Mladina in Jastrebarsko will host the Croatian Open Motocross Championship, while one week earlier, on 19 September, the same venue will host the Croatian and Slovenian Open Trial Championship.
On 12 September, Dugo Selo will host the National XCC Championship at its pump track, followed by Pump Village the next day. Samobor will host the ITF J30 Samobor Open tennis tournament from 12 to 19 September, alongside a Hyrox-style hybrid race on 5 September and the Bermet Run from 12 to 26 September. On 12 September at 9 am, Velika Gorica will host the Turopolje Trail at Ključić Brdo, while Sveta Nedelja will organise a recreational cycling event at Lake Kipišće on 20 September at 10 am.
Concerts and Festivals
Moslavina Fest in the Ivanić-Grad area will take place over three Saturdays, with each concert beginning at 8 pm: Ring ABBA Tribute on 12 September at Holy Cross Park in Križ, Beatles Revival Band on 19 September at the Open University, and Kristina Show, a Tina Turner tribute, on 26 September by the well in Kloštar Ivanić.
Dugo Selo will welcome Mejaši on 18 September and Tony Cetinski on 19 September, with both concerts starting at 9 pm. From 19 to 27 September, Samobor will host the 51st Samobor Music Autumn. As part of its Youth Days programme, Zaprešić will welcome Kukus to Trg Ivana Pavla II on 12 September at 8 pm, while Gazde will perform in Gradec on 19 September as part of the Municipality Day celebrations.
Tradition and Local Events
On 5 September, Kloštar Ivanić will host the 19th National and 24th County Exhibition of Indigenous and Protected Horse Breeds and Horse-Drawn Carriages, featuring a riders’ parade, horse judging and a traditional programme.
Stara jela z Dugog Sela, a celebration of traditional dishes from Dugo Selo, will take place from 18 to 20 September. The official opening is scheduled for 18 September at 6 pm, while traditional lunches will be served on 19 and 20 September at 1 pm.
From 15 to 19 September, Velika Gorica will host the Oldtimer Show Turopolje in Dr Franjo Tuđman Park, followed by the 9th Perunfest on 19 and 20 September at the Modić-Bedeković Manor in Donja Lomnica. On 13 September at 2 pm, the Community Centre in Mraclin will host Po starinski – nedelni obed, an event celebrating the traditional Sunday meal.
On 26 September at noon, Trg Ante Starčevića in Sveti Ivan Zelina will host the Zelinsko coprničko spravišće, an event inspired by local folklore and witchcraft traditions. Vrbovec will host the Vrbovec Horse Ride and Equestrian Games at the town market on 20 September, followed by Beer Fest at Trg Petra Zrinskog on 26 September. On 12 September, the Donja Kupčina Local Heritage Museum in Pisarovina will welcome Folk-n-Fan, a children’s folklore festival.
Exhibitions, Theatre and Books
Ivanić-Grad will round off the month with two events at the Open University: the theatre production Mama se vraća on 29 September at 8 pm, followed by Infra Red, an exhibition by academic painter Ivana Ožetski, on 30 September at 7 pm. On 22 September at 7:30 pm, Galženica Hall in Velika Gorica will host the premiere of Još jedna srčana izvedba, a production by Štoos Theatre and Trećeprostor.
From 11 to 13 September, the Jastreb Hunting Association will celebrate its 100th anniversary at Žitnica in Jastrebarsko. In Sveta Nedelja, an exhibition of paintings by Nikola Brlečić will be on display at the Tourist Information Centre from 25 September to 11 October, while the Vrbovec Public Library will host an exhibition of works by Mladen Kefelja until 13 September.
