Located 40 km from Zagreb, Vrbovec is home to approximately 5,000 residents. Its origins can be traced back to 1244, as documented by King Bela IV. The castle dates to 1528 and was initially constructed as a defensive structure against the Turks. Over the years, it changed hands several times, belonging to families such as the Zrinski, Erdödy, and Patačić families. Notably, Petar Zrinski, born in 1621, hailed from Vrbovec. Although only the cylindrical tower of the castle remains today, the region is rich in cultural heritage. One such example is the birthplace of Zagorka, M.J., a renowned writer of popular novels and the first female journalist in southern Europe. The area also boasts numerous rural picnic spots, ideal for relaxation and a gastronomic experience. Additionally, visitors can enjoy various sporting activities, including tennis, clay pigeon shooting, and fishing on the lakes. In August, the "What did our ancestors eat" event showcases traditional cuisine.
