This charming town boasts a population of approximately 15,990 residents and is situated in the Lonja River valley, 37 km northeast of Zagreb. It has a rich history as the cultural and economic hub of Croatian Prigorje. Nowadays, it is renowned for its exquisite wines and the captivating wine route that winds through wine-growing villages from Donja Zelina to Nespeš and Gornje Psarjevo and ultimately to St. Ivan Zelina. The area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, resulting in many cultural heritage sites such as chapels, churches, and the medieval castle Zelingrad. Additionally, there are numerous opportunities for sports and recreation, including tennis courts, hiking, cycling, and motorcycling. The sports and recreation centre "Zelina" is also close to the city centre.
